Reincarnation

Reincarnation is the belief that, upon death, the soul of a living creature is reborn in another body. Literally translated, the term "reincarnation" means "to be made flesh again." Interestingly, a number of religions feature reincarnation as a central tenet, though the belief is most often associated with Eastern religions, including Hinduism and Buddhism.

Hindu Reincarnation Beliefs
In Hinduism, reincarnation is referred to as "samsara," which is the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. Interestingly, samsara does not appear in the Vedic hymns, the most ancient Hindu writings. The Upanishads are the first writings to mention Hindu beliefs on reincarnation.

Reincarnation is attractive to a number of people, as it allows them to believe that the life that they are currently living isn't the only life they will get to experience.

The Basics of Reincarnation

In Hinduism and a number of other religions, reincarnation is driven by karma. The idea is that a soul will be rewarded for living an honest and just life, just as it will be punished for living a hate-filled or unjust life.

Literally translated, the word "karma" means "deed" or "act." However, when examined in-depth, the term more closely relates to the notion of causes and effect, or action and reaction.

According to the theory of reincarnation, people can accumulate both positive and negative karma throughout their lives. Luckily, however, positive karma can overcome negative karma.

Through reincarnation, people, in the lives they currently live, are a total of all of their past lives. To keep us from being consumed with the pain or trauma that we experienced in past lives, however, we are protected from remembering our past lives.

Anne Heche and the Reincarnation of God
In her autobiography, "Call Me Crazy," Anne Heche relates a number of dreams and experiences, claiming she was God reincarnated: "'I was called Celestia, the reincarnation of God,'' writes Heche."

Moksha and Reincarnation

Many people who believe in reincarnation also believe in moksha, or the liberation from the cycle of life and death. However, Hindu beliefs state that in order to attain Moksha, people must undergo a number of spiritual realizations through their many lives here on Earth.

Only souls that attain moksha break free from the cycle of life and death.

Reincarnation and Christianity

As a whole, Christians don't believe in reincarnation, as the doctrine goes against several of the basic teachings of Christianity. For one thing, Christians believe that God, not karma, punishes evil actions and rewards good deeds.

Also, according to the dogma of Christianity, Jesus died for the sins of man. In reincarnation, people pay off bad deeds (or negative karma) by doing good deeds and building positive karma throughout our numerous lives. Thus, in reincarnation, there is no need for a savior, as people are their own salvation.
