As the latest example of a cryptid, or animal not yet proven to exist, the Chupacabra has been theorized to actually be a number of different creatures, ranging from mangy coyotes to misplaced aliens.

Described by one reporter as "the Latin American Bigfoot," the creature's legend first ignited when tales of livestock slayings emerged from Puerto Rico. Chicken, sheep and goats were found completely drained of blood, with three puncture marks in their necks.

Not surprisingly, these shocking events earned the unknown killer the name "El Chupacabra," meaning "goat sucker" in Spanish. Its eerie reputation has been explored in everything from the television show The X-Files to the lighthearted Scoobie Doo and the Monster of Mexico.

Mysterious History of the Chupacabra

The Chupacabra attained notoriety in the 1990s, when hundreds of unexplained livestock killings befell Puerto Rican ranchers. However, North and South American scientists have been tracing similar bizarre circumstances since a spate of animal killings in Arizona in the 1950s, which may also have been the work of notorious El Chupacabra.

During the 1970s, "El Vampiro de Moca," or The Vampire of Moca, reportedly killed several animals on the island of Puerto Rico. The fact that the dead animals were all found with three puncture marks on their necks would became significant.

In 1987, Puerto Rican newspapers chronicled multiple accounts of goats, chickens and even horses drained of blood.

In 1995, the Canovanas region of Puerto Rico experienced hundreds more of these blood-sucking livestock deaths, bringing global attention to the phenomenon, which was intensified by similar happenings in Chile around 2000.

El Chupacabra Hits Texas

A series of events in 2004 swung the El Chupacabra spotlight to San Antonio, Texas, where a rancher caught and killed an animal that had been killing his livestock. He described the predator as having a canine, yet hairless appearance.

Experts examining the predator's remains say the animal was possibly a sort of coyote or similar canine. They speculated the animal might be afflicted with demodectic mange, which causes hairlessness.

Months later, two similar animals were found and studied. This time, biologists could determined little more than they were probably in the canine class but of unknown species.

Globetrotting Goat Suckers

Next, El Chupacabra scholars were startled when tales of the creature emerged from Russia in 2005. Something that reportedly killed turkeys and sheep by sucking them dry of blood was terrorizing the central part of that country. Eyewitnesses described the predator to be something very close to its North and South American counterparts.

In 2006, El Chupacabra sightings continued in Russia and started occurring in Maine, New York, South Carolina and Peru. In some cases, authorities are still studying photos and even skeletal remains to determine what they can about the creature.

What Chupacabra Looks Like

Conflicting stories of Chupacabra's appearance abound, leading some to refer to different "breeds" of the creature. Regardless of differing details, here are some of the features that most witnesses and experts agree upon. El Chupacabra:

has fangs, spines on its back and green or gray leathery skin.
hops in a somewhat kangaroo-like fashion. When confronted, this breed reportedly screeches and emits a revolting sulfurous aroma.
is a reptilian creature about four feet high, with a canine face, glowing red eyes and a forked tongue. Some describe El Chupacabra to be a dog-reptile hybrid.
is hairless with a spinal ridge.

A larger version of the creature reportedly was spotted in Hawaii. In the Hawaiian accounts, several people talked of seeing a creature described as half-human, half-dog.

El Chubacapras Facts

Theories purporting to explain the Chupacabra mystery range from the mundane to the fantastic. Among them:

Chupacabra is a cousin of sorts to the Madagascan Aye-Aye, most commonly compared to a cross between a raccoon and a woodpecker.
Chupacabras are aliens! Even more interesting, the monsters were brought here by the U.S. government, according to some theories. One posits that NASA accidentally released a captured space creature while transporting it somewhere in Latin America.
In the theme of government conspiracies, another theory holds that the creatures were created though genetic mutation. Many Puerto Ricans are said to believe that El Chupacabra escaped from a U.S. laboratory during a storm in the early 1990s.
The animal is a previously unrecognized descendent of an extinct form of giant South American vampire bat.
There is no new species at all, but rather a series of foxes, coyotes and other canine predators suffering from severe mange, which can lead to a hairless, ridged appearance.

Accounts of Chupacabra's appearance and exploits vary wildly, with explanatory theories often contradicting one another.

However, that's not terribly surprising, especially if one considers the greater length of time scientists have been tracking phenomenon like Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster.

With El Chupacabra only recently gaining global attention, some patience may be needed before humanity discovers the truth behind this latest cryptozoological mystery.
